School Holiday Art Program
Q. Where are the classes held?
The classes are held in the studio at the back of Pigments & Palettes Art Shop at 239 Russell Street. You can enter through the front door of the shop. Bathroom facilities are available next door to the studio. Q. How much does it cost? Class fee is $25 and includes all supplies Q. What do I need to bring? All supplies are provided so you don’t need to bring anything. I encourage the kids to either wear something old, or bring an old paint shirt. Arty fun can get messy! They are also welcome to bring a drink bottle and/or a snack. It’s a great idea to put your child’s name on the drink bottle, they often get left behind! Q. How do I make a booking? Preferably, in writing! Txt or email me with your child’s name, age and the date of the preferred workshop. I will respond with a confirmation email and EFT payment option, as payment is required prior to the class. Q. What happens if I’ve paid for a class and I have to cancel? A full refund is offered for cancellations made more than 24 hours before the start of class. Q. Do I have to stay with my child? No. Sometimes new kids are a little shy but as soon as they have their own art project on the go with their own set of art supplies, they are usually engrossed in their own creative world. So you have a rare 1.5 hours to do whatever you like! Q. Do the kids keep their artwork? Absolutely! Masterpieces go home with the kids Q. Do you offer gift vouchers? Yes. Gift vouchers are available for any number of school holiday workshops and are valid for 12 months from date of purchase. Q. Do you run classes during the school term? Yes, I run classes for arty enthusiasts aged 8 – 12. See frequently asked questions for School Term Program below. |
Q. What sort of work do the kids do?
Classes are available for three different age groups: 5—7 years, 8-—9 years and 10—12 years. Each workshop has a set project so all students are given the same instructions. The kids are then free to translate the art project in their own creative way. 5—7 year olds This group do some basic drawing, collage, we dabble with different mediums but oil pastels and water colour paints are a staple in the art room. We often tackle a small craft project so the kids make something to take home in addition to their artwork. 8—9 year olds This age group is exposed to drawing fundamentals. They also dabble with collage, frequently use oil pastels and watercolours but also combine these mediums with acrylic paint and soft pastels. This age group also love crafty projects so we often do them. 10—12 year olds The older groups do more drawing – often using charcoal to learn to sketch loosely and look for shadows to creat depth. We always add colour to our drawings by using either oil pastels, soft pastels, watercolour, acrylic or gouache paint or a combination of mediums. My goal with all the age groups is for the students to explore their own creativity while being shown how to use a variety of different mediums. I encourage the kids to experiment and learn that making “mistakes” is part of the creative process. I want them to embrace the notion that not every creation will be a masterpiece. Like anything, getting good at art takes time, patience and practise! I believe that all kids are creative and anyone can learn to draw All levels of ability are encouraged to participate. I adore the work the kids do and it is very rewarding seeing a proud smile on their face after they complete their project. School Term Art Program
Q. When are the classes held?
School term classes are 1.5 hours long and run from 3.45 til 5.15pm. This timeslot allows the art shop to close at 5.30pm. Currently there is an option for a Monday or a Tuesday class. Q. What age groups do you accommodate? School term classes are available for children aged between 8 and 12 years. Classes are separated into two different age groups, that alternate weekly: 8-—9 years and 10—12 years. Q. How much does it cost? The school term fee is $80 (four classes, over eight weeks) and this fee includes all supplies. As the school term is sold as a block of 4 classes, unfortunately there is no refund if you are not able to attend one or more of the classes. Q. Where are the classes held? The classes are held in the studio at the back of Pigments & Palettes Art Shop at 239 Russell Street. You can enter through the front door of the shop. Bathroom facilities are available next door to the studio. Q. What do I need to bring? All supplies are provided so you don’t need to bring anything. I encourage the kids to bring an A3 sized, spiral bound sketch book. It is a great place for the kids to keep their art, and makes it easy to see their development over time. It’s also a nice, contained way to show their work to others. It is not necessary, as I always have paper on hand for their project. An old paint shirt keeps uniforms paint-—splodge free! Despite our best intentions, arty fun can get messy. The kids are also welcome to bring a drink bottle and/or a snack. It’s a great idea to put your child’s name on the drink bottle, they often get left behind! Q. How do I make a booking? Preferably, in writing: via email or text. I will respond and coordinate the preferred day with you. Once confirmed, I will send an email with an EFT payment option. Payment is required in full prior to the second class of the program. |
Q. Do the kids keep their artwork?
Absolutely! Masterpieces go home with the kids. Q. What sort of work do the kids do? The school term program differs slightly to the school holiday program in that I challenge the kids a little more with their drawing. I teach them to draw lightly and loosely, starting with basic shapes, and add detail last. We tend not to use templates, and we always add colour. 8—9 year olds This age group frequently uses oil pastels and watercolours but we also combine these mediums with acrylic paint and occasionally soft pastels. The projects are designed to use different mediums and techniques from week to week to keep things fresh. 10—12 year olds I expose the older group to more mediums — in addition to the artroom staples of oil pastels and watercolour, we do more work with soft pastels, acrylic and gouache paint or a combination of mediums. I believe that all kids are creative and anyone can learn to draw. I adore the work the kids do and it is very rewarding seeing a proud smile on their face after they complete their project. Their confidence with their art is more important to me than perfect results. |
